CE Course Summary

This addresses the diagnostic challenges and treatment approaches for non-odontogenic orofacial pain, with particular emphasis on two challenging diagnoses: myofascial pain and burning mouth syndrome. Through detailed case presentations and evidence-based protocols, participants will learn systematic assessment techniques, differential diagnosis strategies, and multimodal treatment options for complex pain conditions affecting the orofacial region.

This continuing education course will provide the attendees with the essential skills necessary for evaluating and managing non-odontogenic orofacial pain disorders. The presentation covers the epidemiology and prevalence of orofacial pain conditions, detailed clinical examination techniques including temporomandibular joint and muscle palpation protocols, and the pathophysiology of myofascial pain with trigger point referral patterns. Special attention is given to the relationship between temporomandibular disorders and burning mouth syndrome, with evidence-based pharmacological management using tricyclic antidepressants. Through clinical case presentations utilizing a structured documentation system (SmartNote), participants will learn to create comprehensive clinical notes, formulate accurate differential diagnoses, and develop appropriate treatment plans incorporating trigger point injections, home therapy protocols, and medication management.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Perform standardized orofacial pain examinations including temporomandibular joint palpation, range of motion assessment, and identification of myofascial trigger points.

Develop accurate differential diagnoses for non-odontogenic orofacial pain by systematically evaluating nociceptive versus neuropathic mechanisms and excluding odontogenic and neurovascular causes.

Apply evidence-based pharmacological management using tricyclic antidepressants, including appropriate drug selection, dosing protocols, and adverse effect monitoring.

Document comprehensive clinical assessments using structured tools that capture chief complaints, detailed history, examination findings, and multimodal treatment plans.
